CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Haruka Kokonose
CANON: Kagerou Project
CANON REFERENCE: As the Kagerou Project wiki is generally pretty inaccurate and bare bones, I wrote Haruka’s canon history up here
AGE: 16 (Canon spans from 16-19)
GENDER: Male.
YEAR IN SCHOOL/FACULTY POSITION: 10th Grade
APPEARANCE: Here!
PERSONALITY: Haruka Kokonose is about as easy-going as it gets. Most people would expect someone with a life endangering illness to be very cautious, worried, downtrodden, sluggish, or pessimistic but Haruka defies just about each and every one of these. No moment illustrates this better than after having a brush with death around Christmas time, he merely sits in the hospital, happily eating his food until he gets to leave. He’s excited at the prospect of leaving of course, but he shows no emotional distress towards anything that’s happening to him while staying there. This isn't to say his condition doesn't bother him at all--before his death, he very emotionally curses his body for being so weak and not allowed him to be normal, but who wouldn't when faced with death?
For someone with such a weak constitution, Haruka is extremely enthusiastic and expressive. During the cultural festival, Haruka can hardly contain his excitement about their booth, gleefully cheering Takane on from the sidelines during her matches. After the cultural festival, Haruka was so excited about Christmas that he took to planning an entire party all by himself. One of the few times he shows any actual distress in canon is when he worries that the game he created with Kenjirou wouldn’t be any fun, but this is truly a blue moon scenario compared to how his attitude most of the time. As excited as he can get, he’s still a generally laid back person when it comes to the things he isn’t interested in. He’ll often doze off in the middle of class or doodle instead of paying attention.
On top of being positive and wearing a smile as much as he can, Haruka is very earnest and kind. He never judges Takane for her interests or belittles her for it, despite it not being “normal” for a girl to be so into video games by society’s standards. He tries to be as accommodating as possible at all times, even willing to put aside his idea of doing a booth for the culture festival if it would be too much trouble for Takane. In fact, the few times he actually got a bit down on himself were always because he was worried about not being able to make others happy. Haruka is the type of person to always put others before himself.
Haruka, though a bit dense at times, is depicted as being rather receptive of other people’s feelings, shown when he assures Takane that he’ll never hate her, no matter what happens with her. He noticed that she was feeling self-conscious and vulnerable, and therefore did his best to reassure her that everything was fine. But as nice as he can be, Haruka does have a cheeky, playful side that manifests on occasion, especially around Takane. He’ll playfully ask if he should be calling her “Ene” instead of Takane, or even tease her that she isn’t allowed to play games until she finishes her homework, while tantalizingly playing them right in front of her.
Though he doesn’t show it often, Haruka is definitely smart. He’s often shown easily working through his homework and classwork, offering Takane help with her own. He even tutors Ayano for a time. Certainly, he’s booksmart, but that doesn’t exempt him from being somewhat of an airhead at times; or rather, most of the time. Haruka is the kind of person who will try to hard to pet a cat that he’ll accidentally fall into fountain and get his clothes wet. At which point he’ll promptly take all of his clothes off in public save for his underwear instead of just walking around with wet clothes. Even then, he doesn’t pay mind to what others think, never getting embarrassed or flustered even standing half naked in front of Takane. A lot of the time the promise or allure of food is exactly enough to get Haruka to put everything else going on in his brain on the backburner. At one point he even worries Takane half to death by disappearing for a mysteriously long time after the cultural festival in order to collect as much food as possible before the stands closed. Meanwhile, Takane thought he might have been dead.
Haruka’s AU self is only slightly different, changed by the way that he grew up. Rather than being put in a separate class in a normal high school because of his health, Haruka never was put in school to begin with. He spent his entire life homeschooled with private tutors. Because of this, he never interacted with other kids, and thus is a fair bit shyer and has trouble putting himself out there. While still very eager and very friendly, he does express discomfort when placed into sudden social situations that he doesn’t feel he knows how to control. He also has a tendency to become slightly more downtrodden at rare occasions, not because of his condition, but because he feels so lonely and different from other people, and wishes he could have friends and be normal.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Haruka’s mutant power is very simple: He has a superhuman body. This entails vastly increased strength, speed, reflexes, and overall durability of his body. The limit of his strength currently is being able to lift just upwards of half a ton, give or take, while exerting himself to the fullest. Haruka’s running speed tops out around 45mph at maximum sprint (keep in mind that he cannot sustain this speed for long periods of time), nearly two times as fast as the fastest recorded human running speed. Haruka’s body also has great durability and heals itself astoundingly quickly, allowing him to survive various critical injuries and makes many cuts and bruises almost completely negligible after a few hours. His skeleton and tissue is vastly more durable than that of the average human as well, allowing him to safely perform many of the feats of strength he is capable of. This is not to say Haruka is invincible, as he's still susceptible to most fatal injuries (think getting shot in the head, losing limbs, especially critical internal damage. His powers can't prevent bleeding out either.) Unfortunately for Haruka, he has a critical weakness in relationship to these powers that greatly limit their use and ability to improve. Haruka was born with a heart condition (more on that in the AU History section) that cut down his life expectancy to the point where he should not have lived past ten years old. Fortunately enough, his mutant abilities manifested and his body continually repairs itself so as to never fully give out and die. As powerful as Haruka’s abilities make him, much of his energy is spent keeping his condition under control to the point where he is able to be active and mobile; therefore, despite all his strengths, he still retains many of the symptoms of his illness. Haruka has a tendency to faint, become lightheaded and/or dizzy on top of what tends to be excruciating chest pain. When Haruka is exerting his abilities to the extreme, the illness wears on him more and more until he is unable to continue being active. This places a time limit on how long he can exert his abilities, essentially crippling them and making it incredibly difficult to ever reach their full potential.
AU HISTORY: Haruka Kokonose was born in California to extremely bad news. He had a heart condition that would cut his life expectancy so drastically that it would be a “miracle” were he to live past ten years old. Too much excitement or strain on his body could easily put him in danger, and thus Haruka had an extremely coddled childhood. He couldn’t go outside, he couldn’t play with other kids, and he was homeschooled. Though he would get lonely at times, Haruka never truly lost his smile despite all of the hardships he was forced to face in his young life. He found happiness and solace in art, scribbling on whatever he could find from the time that he was a toddler. By the time he was nine, he was already drawing at very advanced levels; without friends to play with, Haruka was able to focus almost all of his time on his craft and his parents spared no expense in getting him the best private art teachers possible.
As he pursued his interest in art, Haruka developed a peculiar habit in snapping pencils. Often without thinking, he’d constantly end up splitting his pencils in half when drawing or clutching them idly. This would be the first sign of his mutant abilities manifesting themselves. Because he was never allowed to partake in very physical activities, he failed to notice the incredible strength he was capable of outputting. As the years went by, he did begin to notice more and more that he was able to do things that normal kids, or even adults, weren't close to being capable of. Rather than finding it cool or exciting like many kids would, it utterly terrified him, because he thought it to be a sign of his own impending death. He never told his parents or anyone else until they found out for themselves.
Haruka reached his eleventh birthday, expecting to die any day. After all, he was only projected to live until the time he was ten, and only a miracle would allow him to keep going after that. Even after being examined by doctors, they couldn’t figure out why his condition had stayed exactly the same as it had been years prior. It wasn’t too abnormal for “fighters” to live past expectations, so the fact that he was a mutant went unnoticed for another few years, much to Haruka’s relief. Haruka began to question his abilities more and more the longer he was alive, but was still too afraid to seek answers, and tried to utilize his superhuman traits as rarely as possible.
It was rare that Haruka would be permitted to go out by himself, but having reached young adulthood, his parents permitted him to take trips to the corner store to retrieve sweets and other snacks for himself—Haruka had always had an enormous appetite. One fateful day, after crossing the street, a car skidded around the corner at blinding speed. The car popped over the curb and slammed into Haruka, nearly ripping a hole in the boy as it wrecked into the side of the corner store. This not only gravely wounded him, but also left him trapped underneath the wreckage of the car. It was an agonizing moment that would greatly affect Haruka in the weeks to come. However, not only was he able to survive the accident, he had actually been able to push the car off of himself in front of a mass of onlookers. Upon being treated, he was found to have suffered such drastic internal damage that it was a miracle he even survived. That day, it finally became clear to Haruka, the doctors, his parents, and everyone who saw the accident that he was a mutant.
Now that the secret of his superhuman body was out, as well as revealed to be the reason that he would never fully succumb to his illness, there was little choice but to place him in the care of Xavier Academy from then on.

NETWORK SAMPLE: [Haruka’s big dumb face shows up on the video feed, ensuring that everyone watching is in for a mildly embarrassing treat.]
Hello fellow…Um, mutants? It still feels weird to call people that. I don’t know, it seems a little…mean? Feels like something rude someone would call me in the street…Oh! Oh, I got distracted, sorry!
Anyway! After seeing all of your amazing abilities, I felt reminded of the old superhero comics I used to read when I was having stuff done at the hospital. Seeing so many of you in the flesh makes my own abilities seem kinda boring in comparison, really… [He laughs, trying to make sure they know he’s only jokingly being self deprecating.] Darn it! I keep getting distracted! I’ll stay on task this time, I promise!
I got inspired to design would be costumes for myself if I were a superhero from those comics and thought I’d ask your opinions! So without further ado…[Grinning, he pulls out his sketch pad and places it in front of the screen. The first is a skintight jumpsuit, the kind you’d see on a hero in a show like “Power Rangers.” It’s adorned with a thin chest plate that has stylistic lettering of “HK” on it as well as a flowing scarf and cape.]
Pretty simplistic, I don’t think it’s very practical though. I think being a little traditional can be nice, though! [Next up is a dark coat with long sleeves that go past the hands and a large collar. The outfit is covered in chains and a gasmask hangs loosely around the neck.]
Dark and mysterious, right? Who wouldn’t be afraid of something like that? Not that…I want to be the kind of person people are afraid of…Actually maybe I shouldn’t do this one, ehehehe….
And finally…[He gleefully flips to the last page. You can really tell how much he’s enjoying this fantasy. It’s an outfit covered in different kinds of padding giving it a sort of militaristic look. Over the head is something similar to a motorcycle helmet—tinted so that you can’t see the face inside. Neon green lining runs throughout the entire outfit, giving the feeling of something from the 80’s movie “Tron.”] I think this one is my favorite…Equal parts mysterious and heroic!
So, let me know what you think! And of course I’d be happy to design any of you outfits too if you wanted! I know it’s kind of silly, but it’s fun to indulge in fantasies like this, you know?
Well, have a great day everyone!
LOG SAMPLE: The pencil breaks. Again and again. It became customary to have plenty of twelve-packs at the ready, because at any moment he seemed to fall into an anxious fit where he couldn’t keep from applying too much strength into his grip; it persisted even from the days when he couldn’t control his powers. Haruka runs his hand through his hair, ever flustered by his inability to keep a pencil from snapping in half.
“It’s never going to get done like this,” he chuckles lightly to himself half-heartedly before taking a deep breathe. It had been a few weeks since he first came to the academy, but the strangeness of being away from home after living such a sheltered life was still overwhelming. Art was always Haruka’s stress outlet, but it’s hard when your writing utensil is constantly being rendered useless.
He slinks back in his chair, trying to calm himself down so that his hands will stop acting on their own. In order to do so, he starts recalling all of the positives instead of the negatives. For the first time in his life, he’s able to make friends and go to school like a normal kid, even if there wasn’t exactly much “normal” about it. Just the thought begins to make a smile creepy across his face. He was in charge of himself now. What he eats, when he sleeps, how he spends his time…especially what he eats. His mind runs blissfully wild at the thought of being able to dig into all sort of fatty, fried foods without having to worry about his parents breathing down his neck. It’s absolute independence! It was something he never dreamed of having, but here he is, living it. As stressfully and scary as it is to be in such a new place that he doesn’t understand, he forces his mind to retreat to a simple, peaceful place. The truth was that this place would probably be the best thing to ever happen to him.
“Most importantly of all…” the graphite tip touched down again to the paper, this time flowing steadily and precisely in the boy’s graceful hands.
“I’m still alive! And I’m going to have a great life here!”
