Canon History
Haruka Kokonose was a young boy afflicted with a health condition that didn’t allow him to attend normal classes at school. Instead, he was placed in a special class consisting of only himself and one other student, Takane Enemoto. Takane, like Haruka, had health issues of her own that prevented her from attending class with most other students. Along with their instructor, Kenjirou Tateyama, they lived out most of their school days in relative boredom.
Relative boredom persisted until one summer; Haruka expressed interest in the culture festival. Although Takane was initially opposed to the idea, being that not only was it a pain, but also because they would stick out like a sore thumb because they’re a class of only two people. Before, Haruka had never protested, as he didn’t want to cause trouble for Takane. Though he tried to downplay his enthusiasm for the festival, Haruka was actually quite interested in participating; in fact, he specifically had envisioned their class doing a shooting game as their activity. Upon noticing the true extent of Haruka’s enthusiasm, she decides to take the initiative and just make it happen. Takane quickly realized that a traditional shooting game would be too much work for a class of three people, but thankfully she ended up with a more creative solution. With a brilliant programmer for a teacher and a talented artist for a classmate, she would bully--er, encourage them into designing a shooting video game. Takane, secretly an extremely talented gamer, would have no problem defeating anyone who dared to come to their activity, therefore, even though they didn’t have the money for more than one prize, they wouldn’t have to worry about losing it. Kenjirou would let her secret slip to Haruka, absolutely mortifying Takane. Though Takane expected Haruka to laugh or mock her for her interests, he was genuinely impressed and awed by her skill and prowess, which…only seemed to annoy Takane even more.
Haruka designed the game excitedly; drawing lots of blood and guts amidst cute and cuddly cartoon animals in what he thought was capturing the kind of thing that Takane would be interested in. He even designed the game’s enemy after her, since the other players would be competing against her. The festival seemed to go off without a hitch until one of the contestants noted that Takane was actually “Lightning Dancer Ene”, the second best player in the nation at a popular shooting game. Not only was she now outed as an enormous gamer to the Haruka, the boy she likes, but now contestants were flocking to their classroom in order to try to beat her. Again, she worried that Haruka may react unfavorably upon seeing this, but he assured her that no matter how she might change or what he might learn about her, he’ll never hate her. He even added that he’d love to play games with her someday, too.
Though many tried, including two suspicious kids who seemed to be cheating, Takane would remain undefeated until she decided to lose at the very end of the day to make it look fair. However, the person she chose to lose to, an irritating boy named Shintaro, actually ended up legitimately besting her. The damage only went as far as Takane’s pride, however, as he told her to forget about both the prize and a bet they had made. During all this Haruka had been watching with excitement, cheering Takane on as much as he could.
As it turned out, the boy that defeated Takane was friends with Ayano Tateyama, the daughter of Haruka and Takane’s teacher. The four of them managed to become a sort of friends, with Haruka eventually tutoring Ayano when she needed help with schoolwork, and occasionally hanging around with Shintaro and coveting the boy’s sandwiches.
Things didn’t stay peachy for long, because Haruka’s condition seemed to start getting worse and worse. At the end of the year, Haruka had planned a Christmas party, a day which also coincided with his birthday. Shortly before the party however, Haruka had an attack and had to be hospitalized. Though a worried Takane rushed to the hospital to see him, the attack proved that it wasn’t anything life threatening, and Haruka had already eaten five servings of food in the time since he woke up. Even so, he had to remain in the hospital for a month, causing him to miss enough school to require summer classes. Thankfully, or perhaps, unfortunately, Takane also had to take summer classes because of her bad grades, so the two would stay together. In the time between the cultural festival and this summer, Haruka became rather addicted to the shooting game that Takane was so renowned at. He became so skilled at it that he actually began to become a well-known player as well.
One day, while playing the game after finishing his assignments earlier, Takane got upset that she couldn’t play as well because she still had work to do. Haruka brushed her off and told her she can play when she finished, and proceeded to become rather absorbed in the game. Takane, feeling ignored, decided to ignore Haruka as well in a ploy to get him to start paying attention to her again. So she put her headphones on and put her head down. A while passed, and Haruka had still not tried to get her attention. Angrily, she lifted her head up to say something when she found that he was sitting perfectly at his desk, motionless, head drooped, and arms limp. It appeared that he had had some kind of stroke while she had her head down, and may have even tried to get her to help while she was ignoring him. Shocked, she could only cling powerlessly to Haruka, sobbing and crying out for help. Eventually, Kenjirou came running into the room to take Haruka to the hospital, assuring Takane that he would be okay.
But he wasn’t okay. Everything he had told Takane was a lie. The truth was that they were both used as an experiment. Haruka had died, and Kenjirou was behind it, and not only Haruka was killed, Takane too met her end on the same day thanks to Kenjirou’s machinations. He was experimenting on something called the “Kagerou Daze”, a phenomena that, when two people are killed on August 15th, one will return to life with a special ability thanks to a snake from the head of the legendary Medusa named Azami. However, due to Kenjirou’s experiments, both Haruka and Takane would live on with special abilities, though neither would remain the same. For Haruka, his ability was that he could transform himself into an “ideal” body. Ideal in this case representing his avatar from the shooting game. While playing the shooting with Takane game, Haruka had created an avatar of himself named "Konoha." Konoha was the kind of person he thought to be ideal. In the game he was strong, fast, and unaffected by any illnesses. Thus, when his power activated, he would become Konoha, the avatar manifesting as an “immortal” body for him, eliminating his health problems and affording him strength and speed above the level of normal humans. Unfortunately for him, the idea of having a new body that wasn't his own terrified him, and because he didn't accept his body, it became an amnesiac husk, leaving his mind and memories to be lost to the kagerou daze.
He would be taken to live with Kenjirou, being given no clues about his past life. Eventually two children, Hibiya Amamiya and Hiyori Asahina would come to visit for the Obon holidays in August, and he would watch over them for some time. One day, two years after Haruka's "death", August 15th, Hiyori would run into the street without caution, with Hibiya running after her. Konoha would watch helplessly as an oncoming truck crushed Hibiya’s body. He too, was a victim of the Kagerou Daze, which meant that while Hibiya’s life was spared, Hiyori’s was taken. Konoha participated in this daze as well, being stuck watching the incident over and over and over until he finally broke free. At the hospital he met with Shintaro and Ene, who was actually Takane’s new form, a “cybergirl” that lived in Shintaro’s phone and computer. She, like Konoha, was experimented on after her "death" by Kenjirou, thus resulting in the form she took now. Though Ene recognized Konoha as Haruka, his amnesia meant that he wouldn’t be able to do the same for her.
Konoha and Hibiya both would join the “Mekakushi Dan”, a group that Shintaro and Ene were a part of. Everyone in the group, barring Shintaro, was also someone who had been caught in the Kagerou Daze, meaning that each member had their own special ability. Together they would all become friends as they explored the secrets of their abilities and goofed off. They mostly goofed off, though.
The fun would last about until Konoha’s body was possessed by a being known as the wide-eyed snake. The wide eyed snake was dark and sinister, praying off the wishes and desires of mankind. It was the one who manipulated Azami into creating the kagerou daze in the first place. Now "Dark Konoha" (Heretofore referred to as “Kuroha”, the fan nickname.) as the snake had take over Konoha’s body, changing his white hair and white clothing into all black. Kuroha would appear before the Mekakushi Dan only to brutally slaughter the entirety of the Dan save for one member, Mary Kozakura. Mary help the unique ability to “reset” reality, resulting in the timeline skipping backwards so that the events could play out all over again, and hopefully different. Kuroha would be there at the end of almost every timeline, knowingly goading Mary into using her power. Kuroha actually turned out to be snake that was
This creates a myriad of separate realities these same characters find themselves in. These stretch across the songs, manga, and novels of the series as the timeline is reset again and again giving way to another summer of different experiences for Haruka/Konoha to experience. This includes a timeline where rather than becoming Konoha, Haruka simply becomes an alternate version of his original self.
The series seems to end for good in the anime timeloop, and though vague as to the logistics of just how it came about, the Mekakushi Dan defeated the snake and ended the looping for good. After overtaking Kuroha and regaining control of his body, Konoha uses the snake's life force to bring back Hiyori, and Haruka is able to leave the daze in his original body. This however, resulted in the being known as Konoha becoming no more, as Haruka regained his physical self. From then on, all of the Mekakushi Dan go on to live their lives in what one can only assume is happiness.
